Weight to Go
Tips for the heavy bag

I went to the Gym last night with the group, and as usual I spent a good amount of time in the kick boxing area working the heavy bag.

I focused mostly on my hand combinations and through in a few foot combinations as well, seeing as Danielle was kind enough to hold the bag for me.  It felt fantastic, so I thought I’d post my 3 tips for people who’ve never worked the heavy bag before:

1. wrap your hands! whether it’s an Everlast wrap, boxing gloves or speed gloves, you will want some form of protection on your knuckles. I’ve seen a lot of people go at the bag bare knuckled and split their knuckles open, avoid the pain and possible infection. WRAP YOUR HANDS.

2. Don’t worry about how much you are moving the bag, in the beginning it won’t move very much at all, and thats ok, let yourself get used to the feeling of hitting a solid object, eventually you’ll start getting the muscle and technique that gives you a bit more power to your punch.

3. If you intend to do leg work such as round house kicks to a heavy bag, do yourselfa favor and buy some shin guards, your legs probably won’t be used to the impact which leads to bruises and shin problems, I wasn’t thinking last night and went at the bag without shin guards and now have a lovely bruise to show off.

well there it is.  The bag can be one of the most fun and fulfilling work outs!

First night success

Or at least I feel it was a success.  We all made it to the gym tonight and spent a good hour there working out on whatever machines struck our fancy.  I personally am kinda sore right now and anticipate more soreness in the morning.  And now, I am exhausted and have class tomorrow morning so that’s it for now.
